Everything you always wanted to know about your body - but were too polite to ask...
The processes of the human body can be smelly, slimy and - thanks to this new, interactive exhibit - also highly educational. Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body, based on the best-selling book, uses animatronics and imaginative exhibits to explore the good, the bad and the downright ugly about runny noses, body odor and much more.  Funded in part by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation through the Arkansas Discovery Network of Museums.  Thanks to our generous sponsors:

"African Americans in Bowie County" Book release

The Texarkana Museums System now has a new publication titled, “African-American Life in Bowie County , Texas through 1965.”  The booklet is similar to previous magazine-style publications related to regional history.

The booklet was written by Dr. Beverly Rowe using research and photos from early Bowie County through 1965.  Dr. Rowe used photographs, maps and interviews to complete the 36-pages.  The project, which is supported in part by the Texas Historical Commission, began some time ago, and Dr. Rowe was instrumental in seeing completion of the booklet in time for African American History Month.  TMS is excited to have her expertise in history for an excellent educational tool.

The booklet discusses early life among African Americans including work, education, family and social aspects.  Black and white photographs from the collections of the Texarkana Museums System’s Wilbur Smith Research Library helped produce an emotional and informative booklet.

“African-American Life in Bowie County, Texas through 1965” will be distributed to area schools, libraries and other research centers free of charge.  It is also available for a small fee to individuals.

The photographs used in the publications are outstanding.  Sources for early African American life photographs are very limited.  This is an area of research in which TMS would like to have more material available for teaching and for researchers.  Anyone wishing to provide photographs to be added to the collection of the Texarkana Museums System should contact the Museums at 903/793-4831.  Copies of photographs are appreciated if originals are not available for donation.

The booklet is available at the Museum of Regional History , 219 N. State Line Avenue .  Schools and libraries wishing to receive a copy should contact the Museums at 903/793-4831 or email, texarkanamuseums@cableone.net.  Cost of the booklet to individuals is $5.

Coming in May 2008 to Discovery Place Children's Museum

An archeological team has mysteriously disappeared from a dig site in Palenque, Mexico. They had been investigating a long-standing rumor that a priceless jade medallion is buried in the temple there. However, something horrifying has scared them off!  Luckily, in their haste to escape, they managed to leave behind a video with clues and a warning to all who come after.

The original team has left behind valuable information in the archeology, biology and astromathematics field stations that they constructed.  Our Student Archeologists must uncover the mystery of the dig site and find the priceless treasure!
